This module aims to:
The aim of this technical module is to equip the participants
with both basic and advanced practical skills and knowledge to
enable them to competently carry out manufacture/fabrication of
foot orthoses within a clinical and technical prosthetic and orthotic
delivery setting.
The participants will gain an understanding of the considerations
needed by clinicians to prescribe and design foot orthoses. They
will develop a rationale to understand the importance of appropriate
manufacturing within elements of clinical practice in the area
of foot orthotics, including finishing and modification of foot
orthoses in line with COSHH, MDA regulations, risk assessment,
appropriate use of PPE and all necessary health and safety management
issues.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this module the participant will be able
to:
-
Demonstrate the ability to identify and
make informed decisions on the use of materials for foot orthoses
and an awareness of the process involved for the correct manufacturing
routes as appropriate – including thermoplastics, bonding,
composites and their lay-ups.
-
Understand and be aware of all appropriate
health and safety, COSHH, PPE, risk assessment and general housekeeping
issues related to the area of manufacture/fabrication of foot
orthoses.
-
Demonstrate basic/advanced skills level in
the use of related hand tools – including knives, scissors,
surforms and abrasive materials etc.
-
Demonstrate basic/advanced level in the use
of clinical/technical measuring tools – including measure
tape, rule, callipers, clock gauges etc.
-
Demonstrate basic skills level in the use
of machine tools – including routers, ovens, LEV and vacuum
systems.
-
Demonstrate basic/advanced skills level in
the use of measurement and cutting (to allow knowledge and skills
from forming to finishing) in the manufacture of foot orthoses.
-
Demonstrate the ability at a basic skills
level of understanding the effects of design and costing/efficiency,
sourcing of materials as well as an awareness and appreciation
of the importance of waste disposal – environmental waste/recycling
etc.
-
Demonstrate an awareness of the processes
involved in the range of casting and cast modification for foot
orthoses and be able to relate this to effects on eventual material
selection and workshop practices.
