The Phil Jenkins
Memorial Cup Nottingham 2008
On June 14th, Power League Football centre in
Nottingham hosted the most anticipated annual event in the Orthotics
calendar – the 5 – a side football tournament. The
weather was good and so was the talent as the teams took to the
pitch like professionals. Only one team could claim the cup and
the unstoppable skills of Trust earned them the prize this year
for the second time.
Twelve teams were in attendance at this year’s competition
and were organised into two groups of six. The teams went head
to head in fiercely competitive 10 minute matches – reaffirming
that everyone most definitely had their eyes on the prize. The
game concluded with the top two teams of each group competing
against each other in the final.

The 2008 Teams Line Up
There were some debutants who made an appearance
at this year’s event including Trulife Birmingham –
and after having had a taste for the competition, may have to
consider training earlier next year for a chance at the trophy.
RSL, Trulife and Dacey provided the tournament with two teams
each and did their companies proud with some fine displays on
the pitch. Three time winners Algeos showcased their undeniable
ability but lost in a nail-biting qualifying match to Dacey at
a score of 4 -3. Algeos’ Merseyside neighbours Trust progressed
confidently through their group. The semi final saw the best deserved
four teams play it out for a chance in the final where Trust Orthotics
played against Dacey and Trulife Sheffield against Ken Hall. After
two well played semi finals the trophy was in sight for finalists
Trust and Ken Hall who battled it out to become the winner of
this year’s tournament.
As anticipated due to the high level of talent that had been
displayed throughout the day by both teams - the match was close
with each team creating chances to walk away with the coveted
title and trophy. But it was a bizarre shot at the goal just as
the teams appeared to be heading for a penalty shoot out when
the scores were at a draw at 1 - 1 which just edged the Trust’s
chances closer victory. Paul Turner M.D. of Trust struck the speculative
shot which went wide but the somehow rebounded off Ken Hall goalkeeper’s
back and into the net. Jubilation for Trust and complete disbelief
for the Ken Hall side – proving it’s a game of chances
and uncertainty which certainly paid off for Trust who were crowned
winners when the final whistle blew a short time after.
The final score was set at 2 -1 to Trust, and the game ended
with both teams displaying appreciation for each other in the
recognition of a well played game.
The event drew to a close with the teams cooling off with a few
beers. Algeos M.D George Jones presented the trophy to the delighted
Trust captain Paul Turner who celebrated claiming his second tournament
win. After so much success, he may need to invest in a bigger
trophy cabinet soon!
